The Additional Effect of Manipulation after Arthrographic Capsular Distension in Frozen Shoulder

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the additive effect of manipulation after arthrographic capsular distension in patients with frozen shoulder. Materials and Methods: Seventy three patients who had clinically diagnosed as frozen shoulder were enrolled. We treated thirty nine patients (control group) with arthrographic capsular distension and thirty four patients (experimental group) were treated with manipulation therapy after arthrographic capsular distension. Arthrographic capsular distension was done by anterior shoulder approach technique. Manipulation was done at 5 minute after distension in experimental group. The effect was evaluated by visual analogue pain scale and passive range of motion of shoulder (flexion, abduction, internal rotation and external rotation) before injection, 1 week after injection and 3 weeks after injection. Results: Visual analogue pain scale was decreased in both group. In comparison with control group, visual analogue pain scale of experimental group showed significant decrease at 1 week after injection (p£¼0.05), but no difference at 3 weeks after injection in both group. Passive range of motion improved in both group. Passive range of motion of experimental group showed significantly improved than control group in flexion, internal rotation and external rotation at 1 week after injection (p£¼0.05), but 3 weeks later experimental group improved at only external rotation than control group (p£¼0.05). Conclusion: The manipulation after arthrographic capsular distension in patients with frozen shoulder has additive effect for reduction of pain and improvement of shoulder range of motion.
